  • Format: 5R Swiss, 15m+10s/move, National Rapid rated

Registration

  • Entry criteria: Japan Chess Federation members (Yearly or 1-time members), with National Rapid Rating of under 1800 (The rating referred will be the Rating List released on September 1st, and the National Standard Rating will be referred for players who don’t have a National Rapid Rating).

  • Entry fee: 3,000 yen, U22: 2,100 yen

* U22 means players who have yet to reach age 22 before January 1st, 2023.  i.e. Born in 2001 or later.

  • Registration: Purchase tickets through [Peatix] during the application period (Only-30 spots)
  • Registration Period: 18:00 on Sunday, September 3rd – 23:59 on Thursday, October 11th

  • The winner will be awarded a plaque.
  • The top 3 players will be awarded a prize.
  • The winner will be awarded a Chessmood prize.

  • Tiebreakers will be used to determine the standings.

Tournament rules

  • Tie-breaks: 1. Buchholz Cut-1, 2. Buchholz, 3. Sonneborn-Berger, 4. Sum of the ratings of the opponents, 5. Drawing of lots.
  • Default time:  If any player is not present within 10 min after the game starts, she/he shall lose the game by default. The game is not rated.
  • Pre-registered byes: 0.5 point bye requests will be accepted until 18:00, the day before the tournament. (Please email to japanchess.info@gmail.com ) However, 0 points are given for the last round. Pairing-allocated bye will be 1 point.  If a player has more than 1 requested byes, the player will not qualify for winners.
  • Pairings of the first round will be published at 20:00 the day before the tournament.
  • The organizer will provide chess equipment, including clocks and score sheets. Players must use them.
  • Players need NOT record moves. Once the game is finished, both players sign and hand over the original score sheets to the arbiters. Make sure the results are correct before signing.
  • All electronic devices, smartphones, tablets or smartwatches must be turned off and put away in a bag during games. Players may not wear or carry them out of the venue during the game. This rule applies whether or not the electronic device’s switch is on. Violation of this rule will result in a loss for the offending player, not a forfeited game. During the game, we prohibit using communication devices, including smartphones, in the venue, for visitors and players who have finished the game.
  • The pairings will be done according to the National Standard rating. If there are 2 players with the same rating, the title and the alphabetical order of the players will be used.
  • The tournament will follow FIDE rules unless otherwise stated above. (2nd illegal move – loss of the game. Pressing the clock by mistake or pressing it with the other hand, which touched a piece, will also be judged as an illegal move.)

Media related rules

  • The tournament results will be posted on the Internet (chess-results.com) for reporting purposes. The game record may also be published on the Internet. Participants agree to the publication of their real names, results, and game records.
  • Observers are allowed to take photos for the first 10 minutes of each game, including the use of a mobile, but after 10 minutes, all mobiles have to be put away by the observers, and they are not allowed to use them in the playing room. Exception for people with special permission.
  • Individuals who wish to use photos or videos of participants (during games, award ceremonies, etc.) must be careful to protect their privacy. In addition to obtaining comprehensive consent in advance, for example, in the case of minors, the permission of their guardians must be obtained, and due consideration must be given to the protection of personal information and portrait rights.
  • The organizer will take photos, record videos, and broadcast live coverage of the event. These may be published and used in media such as websites, SNS, video sites, and journals managed by Japan Chess Federation. Participants are supposed to agree to publish and broadcast these photos and videos.

COVID-19 Related Rules

  • All players have to follow the COVID-19 Guidelines 4th Edition.

Visitation

  • There is no registration needed in advance to visit the tournament, and will be accepted at the venue at the date of the tournament.

Other Rules

  • The organizer reserves the right for changing the above rules with adequate reason before the first round starts.
  • Due to the spread of coronavirus infection or other unforeseeable reasons, there may be unavoidable changes to the duration of the rounds or the event may be cancelled.
    Cancellation must be noticed to japanchess.info@gmail.com.
  • If cancellation is made 8-days before the registration deadline and the number of participants has not reached the maximum number, a refund will be made. We do not refund from 7-days before the registration deadline. We do not refund once the number of applicants has reached the maximum.
  • The Japan Chess Federation shall not be responsible for any troubles between individuals.
  • If there is a discrepancy between English and Japanese, the Japanese version prevails.
