Q:What is the World Cup in Chess?

World Cup in chess is hosted by International Chess Federation (FIDE) and its official name is “FIDE World Cup”. Held every other year, this tournament is a knock-out tournament. The women’s tournament, which was previously held concurrently with this event, will now be held separately. The 11th tournament, held this year, has a prize pool of 2 million dollars, which amounts to about 300 million Japanese Yen. This is one of the largest prize pools of any chess event in the world.

The 2025 tournament is a highly anticipated event for chess fans, with 206 of the world’s top players competing in a knockout format. Furthermore, the top three finishers in this competition will qualify for the Candidates Tournament 2026, which will be held one year later, making it a crucial and must-win battle for the players.

Q: Who will be representing Japan?

IM (One of the titles FIDE awards players upon their skills, the abbreviation for “International Master”) Tran Thanh Tu will represent Japan in the open section of the FIDE World Cup 2025.

Originally from Vietnam and now a Japanese citizen, Tu is known to many fans by the nickname “Tu-san” for his unconventional and unique playing style and his charming smile.

Japan first participated in the World Cup in 2023. Tu was also the representative at that time, opening a new chapter for the Japanese chess world. This time, he comes to the world stage for the second consecutive tournament, armed with his victory at this year’s Japan Chess Championship. Great things are expected from Tu’s performance.

We have received the message from IM Tran Thanh Tu, who will compete for Japan in the World Cup.

Dear chess fans in Japan,

I’m grateful for the opportunity to compete again on this world stage among the strongest players.
Building on my previous experience, I’ll do my best to break through the first round this time and give my all in every move, hoping to bring good news to all the chess fans in Japan.
I’ll take each step forward, hoping to show a stronger version of myself this time.
Thank you for your support!

Tu-san played on the first board for the Japan Open Team in the 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad, where he earned a GM norm, attracting a lot of attention. We look forward to his performance in the World Cup as well!
